Such is the true meaning of rendering assistance unto God. Sedition hath never been pleasing unto God, nor were the acts committed in the past by certain foolish ones acceptable in His sight. Know ye that to be killed in the path of His good pleasure is better for you than to kill. The beloved of the Lord must, in this day, behave in such wise amidst His servants that they may by their very deeds and actions guide all men unto the paradise of the All-Glorious.

Esse é o verdadeiro significado de prestar assistência a Deus. A sedição nunca foi do agrado de Deus, nem os actos cometidos no passado por certos insensatos foram aceitáveis aos Seus olhos. Sabei que ser morto no caminho da Sua complacência é melhor para vós do que matar. Os bem-amados do Senhor devem, neste dia, agir com tal sabedoria entre os Seus servos, que os seus próprios actos e feitos guiem todos os homens ao paraíso do Todo Glorioso.

It followeth, therefore, that rendering assistance unto God, in this day, doth not and shall never consist in contending or disputing with any soul; nay rather, what is preferable in the sight of God is that the cities of men’s hearts, which are ruled by the hosts of self and passion, should be subdued by the sword of utterance, of wisdom and of understanding. Thus, whoso seeketh to assist God must, before all else, conquer, with the sword of inner meaning and explanation, the city of his own heart and guard it from the remembrance of all save God, and only then set out to subdue the cities of the hearts of others.

Depreende-se, portanto, que prestar assistência a Deus, neste dia, não consiste, nem consistirá alguma vez em confrontar ou discutir com outra alma; pelo contrário, o que é preferível aos olhos de Deus é que as cidades dos corações dos homens, que estão governadas pelas hostes do ego e da paixão, sejam subjugadas pela espada da palavra, da sabedoria e da compreensão. Assim, quem procurar assistir a Deus deve, antes de tudo mais, conquistar com a espada das explicações e significados interiores, a cidade do seu próprio coração e protegê-lo contra a lembrança de tudo salvo Deus, e só depois, dispor-se a subjugar as cidades dos corações dos outros.

That which God—glorified be His Name!—hath desired for Himself is the hearts of His servants, which are the treasuries of His love and remembrance and the repositories of His knowledge and wisdom. It hath ever been the wish of the Eternal King to cleanse the hearts of His servants from the things of the world and all that pertaineth thereunto, that they may be made worthy recipients of the effulgent splendours of Him Who is the King of all names and attributes. Wherefore must no stranger be allowed in the city of the heart, that the incomparable Friend may enter His abode. By this is meant the effulgence of His names and attributes, and not His exalted Essence, inasmuch as that peerless King hath ever been, and shall eternally remain, sanctified above ascent and descent.

Aquilo que Deus – glorificado seja o Seu Nome! – desejou para Si próprio são os corações dos Seus servos, que são os tesouros do Seu amor e lembrança, e relicários do Seu conhecimento e sabedoria. Sempre foi desejo o Rei Eterno purificar os corações dos Seus servos das coisas do mundo e de tudo o que aí pertence, para que eles possam ser receptores dignos dos esplendores resplandecentes d’Aquele Que é o Rei de todos os nomes e atributos. Por conseguinte, nenhum estranho deve ser autorizado na cidade do coração, para que o Amigo incomparável possa entrar na Sua morada. Por isto pretende-se dizer o esplendor dos Seus nomes e atributos, e não a Sua Essência exaltada, pois esse Rei incomparável sempre esteve, e sempre permanecerá eternamente, santificado acima de ascensão ou descida.

210	It is clear and evident that the one true God—glorified be His mention!—is sanctified above the world and all that is therein. By “rendering assistance unto God”, then, it is not meant that any soul should fight or contend with another. That Sovereign Lord Who doeth whatsoever He pleaseth hath entrusted the kingdom of creation, its lands and its seas, into the hands of the kings, for they are, each according to his degree, the manifestations of His divine power. Should they enter beneath the shadow of the True One, they will be accounted of God, and if not, thy Lord, verily, knoweth and observeth all things.	É claro e evidente que o Deus uno e verdadeiro – glorificada seja a Sua menção – está santificado acima do mundo e de tudo o que nele há. Por “prestar assistência a Deus”, portanto, não se pretende dizer que uma alma deve lutar e confrontar outra. Aquele Senhor Soberano Que faz qualquer coisa que Lhe apraz, confiou o reino da criação, as suas terras e os seus mares, nas mãos dos reis, pois eles são, cada um segundo a sua condição, as manifestações do Seu poder divino. Se ficarem à sombra do Verdadeiro, serão considerados de Deus, e se não, o teu Senhor, em verdade, conhece e observa todas as coisas.

After the arrival of this Servant in this, the city of Adrianople, some of the people of ‘Iráq and elsewhere inquired about the meaning of the term “rendering assistance unto God” which hath been mentioned in the Holy Scriptures. Several answers were sent out in reply, one of which is set forth in these pages, that it may be clearly demonstrated in the court of thy presence that this Servant hath had no end in view but to promote the betterment and well-being of the world. And if certain of the divine favours which, undeserving as I may be, God hath pleased to bestow upon Me be not plain and manifest, this much at least will be clear and apparent, that He, in His surpassing mercy and infinite grace, hath not deprived Mine heart of the ornament of reason. The passage that was referred to concerning the meaning of “rendering assistance unto God” is as follows:

Após a chegada deste Servo a esta cidade de Adrianópolis, algumas pessoas do Iraque e de outros lugares, indagaram sobre o significado da expressão “prestar assistência a Deus” que tem sido mencionada nas Sagradas Escrituras. Algumas respostas foram enviadas, uma das quais está exposta nestas páginas, para que possa ser claramente demonstrado na corte da tua presença, que este Servo não tinha outro objectivo em vista salvo promover o melhoramento e o bem-estar do mundo. E se alguns dos favores divinos que Deus desejou conceder-Me, mesmo que Eu não os mereça, não estejam claros e manifestos, pelo menos será claro e evidente, que Ele, na Sua misericórdia insuperável e graça infinita, não privou o Meu coração do ornamento da razão. Wert thou to observe these events with the eye of fairness, it would become clear and evident in the luminous mirror of thine heart that what occurred was called for by the circumstances, and that no other alternative could be seen. His Majesty himself is witness that in whatever city a number of this people have resided, the hostility of certain functionaries hath enkindled the flame of conflict and contention. This evanescent Soul, however, hath, since His arrival in ‘Iráq, forbidden all to engage in dissension and strife. The witness of this Servant is His very deeds, for all are well aware and will testify that, although a greater number of this people resided in ‘Iráq than in any other land, no one overstepped his limits or transgressed against his neighbour. Fixing their gaze upon God, and reposing their trust in Him, all have now been abiding in peace for well-nigh fifteen years, and, in whatever hath befallen them, they have shown forth patience and resigned themselves to God.

Se observasses estes eventos com os olhos da imparcialidade, tornar-se-ia claro e evidente no espelho luminoso do teu coração que aquilo que aconteceu foi ditado pelas circunstâncias e que não havia nenhuma outra alternativa. Mesmo Sua Majestade é testemunha que em qualquer cidade onde residissem um certo número destas pessoas, a hostilidade de alguns funcionários atiçava a chama do conflito e da discórdia. Esta Alma evanescente, porém, desde a Sua chegada ao Iraque, proibiu todos de se envolverem em dissensão e contenda. O testemunho deste Servo são os Seus próprios actos, pois todos estão bem cientes e testemunharão que, apesar de um grande número destas pessoas viverem no Iraque e noutras terras, ninguém ultrapassou os seus limites ou transgrediu contra o seu próximo. Fixando o seu olhar em Deus, e colocando toda a confiança em n’Ele, todos têm vivido em paz durante quase quinze anos, e, em qualquer coisa que lhes tenha sucedido, eles têm mostrado e resignam-se a Deus.

Fearing lest the actions of these transgressors should produce some outcome at variance with thy world-adorning judgement, this Servant despatched a brief account of the matter to Mírzá Sa‘íd Khán[18] at the Foreign Ministry, so that he might submit it to the royal presence and that whatever thou shouldst please to decree in this respect might be obeyed. A long while elapsed, and no decree was issued. Finally matters came to such a pass that there loomed the threat of imminent strife and bloodshed. Of necessity, therefore, and for the protection of the servants of God, a few of them appealed to the Governor of ‘Iráq.[19]

Temendo que as acções destes transgressores produzissem algum resultado contrário ao teu juízo que adorna o mundo, este Servo enviou um breve relato sobre o assunto para Mírzá Sa‘íd Khán [18] no Ministério das Relações Externas, para que ele o pudesse submeter à presença real, e que o que quer que tu desejasses decretar a este respeito fosse obedecido. Passou-se um longo tempo, e nenhum decreto foi emitido. Por fim, as coisas chegaram a tal ponto que se desenhava a ameaça de luta e derramamento de sangue iminentes. Assim, por necessidade e para protecção dos servos de Deus, alguns deles apelaram ao Governador do Iraque. [19]

By the leave and permission of the King of the Age, this Servant journeyed from the Seat of Sovereignty10 to ‘Iráq, and dwelt for twelve years in that land. Throughout the entire course of this period no account of Our condition was submitted to the court of thy presence, and no representation ever made to foreign powers. Placing Our whole trust in God, We resided in that land until there came to ‘Iráq a certain official[17] who, upon his arrival, undertook to harass this poor company of exiles. Day after day, at the instigation of some of the outwardly learned and of other individuals, he would stir up trouble for these servants, although they had at no time committed any act detrimental to the state and its people or contrary to the rules and customs of the citizens of the realm.

Com o consentimento e permissão do Rei da Época, este Servo viajou da Sede da Soberania [10] para o Iraque, e residiu durante doze anos naquela terra. No decorrer de todo este período, nenhum relato da Nossa situação foi enviado para a corte da tua presença, e nenhum protesto foi apresentado a potências estrangeiras. Colocando toda a Nossa confiança em Deus, residimos naquela terra até que veio para o Iraque um certo funcionário [17] que, após a sua chegada, começou a hostilizar esta pobre companhia de exilados. Dia após dia, instigado por alguns supostos eruditos e outras pessoas, ele levantou problemas para estes servos, apesar de eles em momento algum terem cometido qualquer acto prejudicial para o estado e o seu povo, ou contrário às regras e costumes dos cidadãos do reino.

This is an Epistle, O My God, which I have purposed to send unto the King. Thou knowest that I have wished of him naught but that he should show forth justice to Thy servants and extend his favours unto the people of Thy kingdom. For Myself I have desired only what Thou didst desire, and through Thy succour I wish for naught save that which Thou wishest. Perish the soul that seeketh from Thee aught save Thyself! I swear by Thy glory! Thy good pleasure is my dearest wish, and Thy purpose My highest hope. Have mercy, O My God, upon this poor creature Who hath clung unto the hem of Thy riches, and this suppliant soul Who calleth upon Thee, saying, “Thou art, verily, the Lord of might and glory!” Assist Thou, O My God, His Majesty the Sháh to keep Thy statutes amidst Thy servants and to manifest Thy justice amongst Thy creatures, that he may treat this people as he treateth others. Thou art, in truth, the God of power, of glory and wisdom.

Esta é uma Epístola, ó Meu Deus, que Eu propus enviar ao Rei. Tu sabes que Eu nada desejo para ele, salvo que ele manifeste justiça para com os Teus servos e alargue os seus favores ao povo do Teu reino. Para Mim próprio apenas desejei o que Tu desejas, e através do Teu auxílio nada almejo salvo aquilo que Tu almejas. Pereça a alma que procura em Ti outro que não Tu próprio! Juro pela Tua glória! A Tua complacência é o Meu mais querido desejo, e o Teu propósito a Minha mais elevada esperança. Tem misericórdia, ó Meu Deus, desta pobre criatura Que se agarrou à orla das Tuas riquezas, e desta alma suplicante que Te apela dizendo: “Tu és, em verdade, o Senhor do poder e da glória!” Ajuda, ó Meu Deus, Sua Majestade o Xá a manter as Tuas leis entre os Teus servos e a manifestar a Tua justiça entre as Tuas criaturas, para que ele possa tratar este povo tal como ele os outros. Tu és, em verdade, o Deus de poder, de glória e de sabedoria.
